when policemen are bored

something i do before every shoot i have is location scouting. i like to visit new places, and even old, and check out the light around the time the shoot will take place. i have another wedding next weekend, so i spent some time today out in meridian looking around an industrial park area to find some cool spots. i was walking down a road just thumbing through the pictures i had taken when i hear a car slowly pulling up behind me. i didn’t bother to look back until i heard someone say, “what’s up, bud?” a policeman had pulled up and started walking towards me. i kindly said, “hi there, how’s it going?” he asked what i was up to and i explained that i was a wedding photographer out scouting locations for a wedding next weekend. at this point, as i was facing who i later learned was officer arnell, i heard another car pull up behind me. policeman number two. officer arnell said it’s not often that they see someone walking around with a big camera taking pictures around some closed businesses. he then asked if i had ever had history with the law or any tickets. i immediately said, “no sir. well, i’ve had a couple speeding tickets.” he laughed a little and asked if i had an i.d. so i handed him my license. oh, as i was reaching into my camera bag, he asked if i had any weapons on me. sorry sir, i left my ak-47 at home. he then took my license back to his car and ran a background check. meanwhile, i turned to the other policeman and cheerfully said, “what’s up?” as he answered with a nod. a minute later officer arnell came back, handed me my license, and said i’m good to go. i can’t say that has ever happened to me before. in hindsight, i should have asked to take his picture to accompany this blog post, but alas, i thought of that as they were driving away. so, i’ll include a shot i took on my scouting adventure.

to all you future brides out there, let this be a testament to my dedication and know that i’m willing to take on johnny law to ensure you get some amazing photographs

yesterday evan turned one. we had grand visions of him getting cake all over his face, but at first we thought it was never going to happen. he kept pushing the plate away and trying to escape. so, we just put him in his high chair and he eventually figured out cake isn’t half bad and he went to town! happy birthday, son!

my brother brian and i surprised our mom for her partial retirement this past weekend. i was already out in los angeles for most of the week at a photography workshop, so it was great timing just to meet up in springfield, missouri for the big surprise. my stepdad and grandma were in on it for the previous two months, and did an awesome job keeping it a secret and setting up the retirement dinner for her. we snuck to the back of the restaurant and brian walked around the corner saying “what are you guys doing here?” mom looked up at him and then looked at me realizing i was behind the camera. living so far away from each other, we don’t get to see her as much as we’d like to. her reactions were priceless. we love you mom!

I was contacted a few weeks ago by Jocey from the Wedding Chicks who heard about Eryn and Brian’s wedding from her hairstylist.
