Not a real exciting picture for today’s Tanzania Tuesday, but an exciting story to go along with it! This is the elephant that almost killed us! Well, ok, maybe we didn’t almost die, but we definitely could have been in some serious trouble. Let me explain.

We pulled up to this lone elephant and turned the engine off and just watched. He turned around and squared off to our vehicle. He just stared at us for a little bit and then slowly took a couple steps towards us then stopped. I’m thinking, “OK, maybe he doesn’t want us here. We might want to think about moving.”

Well, he stared at us a for a little longer, and then he thrust his ears out to the side to make himself seem bigger and gave out a very loud yell. Now I’m thinking to myself, “That can’t be good.” So I asked Benjamin, our driver, in a very calm voice, “So, um, Benjamin. Should we, like, leave?” He turned to Rachel and I and said in his very cool accent, “No worries. It’s not a problem.”

Hmmmm, ok. If you say so. The elephant then took a few quick steps at us ready to start charging us, and then Benjamin turned the vehicle back on and revved the engine. This stopped the elephant, but he still looked like he was going to squash us like little bugs. We had a stare down where everyone was real still for what seemed like an eternity, and then Benjamin revved the engine again and the elephant turned and slowly walked in the other direction.

Whew! Disaster averted!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, there really is no shade out in the Serengeti. So what did these little cheetah cubs do? Found shade wherever possible by crawling underneath the vehicles! This one actually got up on top of the tire. In fact, there were several cubs that crawled under the vehicles and we all could not drive away until they moved. Every now and then the mother, who was only a few yards away, would call out to see where her cubs were and they would answer back from their new found shade. Rachel and I just wanted to pick one up and take it home!

In fact, he stared like that at me for a good 5 minutes until we started to drive away. How rude!!

We were in a part of Tanzania at the tail end of the Great Migration that occurs every year. Large herds of zebras, wildebeests, and other grazing animals follow the rains around the Serengeti area. And when I say large herds, I’m talking about hundreds of thousands! It’s hard to get the timing right unless you are there for a long period of time, because it’s all based on the rains that year. Though we did not catch hundreds of thousands, we still saw lots of larger herds throughout the Serengeti area. Here are a bunch of grazing wildebeests we came across one afternoon.
